Our 5 Favorite ASMR Mics

What Type of Microphone is Best for ASMR?

The best type of mic you could use to produce ASMR content is a condenser microphone (with omnidirectional or binaural patterns).

Condenser mics are much more sensitive to external sounds and have the widest frequency response and sound quality, making them a perfect match for ASMR.

Some people tend to say that XLR mics are also preferable over USB mics, but with the number of top-quality USB mics that came out recently, things changed. It’s also important to mention that XLR mics require an audio interface with phantom power to function, while USB mics don’t, making them a more practical choice.

1) 3Dio Free Space Pro II XLR

The Good

  • Spectacular sound quality
  • Comes with stand adapter and carrying case
  • 9V battery that lasts 300+ hours

The Bad

  • Expensive (I mean, really)

This is a microphone at peak performance right here. If you have a big budget at your disposal to get a start in the ASMR world, make no mistake, this is the best option for you.

It’s insanely expensive? Yes. But you get what you pay for. This mic can provide crystal clear, natural, realistic sounds that will blow yours and your audience’s mind. The mic’s sensitivity, followed by a wide dynamic range allows for its binaural recording to be completely next level.

The product also comes along with a nice-looking hard shell carrying case and a base stand adapter that helps you to find a better position for the mic.

And it comes with two phantom power outputs that work regardless of the state of the 9V battery.

2) Blue Yeti USB

This mic is just a great blend of top quality followed by practical usability.

It’s extremely easy to set up (all it takes is to plug it in) and the instructions that come along with the product are also extremely helpful. There are four separate explanations about each of the mic’s patterns and what situations they’re adequate for (cardioid, omnidirectional, bidirectional, and stereo).

We also have the Blue Voice Software, which allows you to craft different vocal sounds and effects, making it easy for you to test new things with your audience.

The fact that the mic has important knobs (volume control, pattern selection, mute/unmute, and mic gain) also facilitates the user experience, enabling you to quickly make any necessary changes to the current sound configuration.

Many claim that the Blue Yeti is a particularly exceptional microphone for capturing tapping, brushing, and water sounds.

On the negative side, some users claim that the brand’s customer support is really flawed. Reports mention abnormal response time and a overall non-resolute communication.

The product also comes with the Elgato Wave Link software, a virtual mixer feature that gives you a lot of sound options to play around with, as well as enabling you to mix all of your audio into one source.

An anti-distortion tech is present, making it basically impossible for any unwanted exterior interference to ruin your streams, making sure that audio transmission it’s always effective and crystal clear to your audience.

Again, their customer support doesn’t look like the best, and their products are a bit overpriced, but they do make good products.

A built-in anti-vibration shock mount suppresses the sounds of any unwanted tumbles or bumps with the elastic rope suspension.

There are four polar patterns you can pick from (stereo, omnidirectional, bidirectional, and cardioid) which maximizes your broadcast setup and sound experimenting possibilities in streams. The mic works through a single super-cardioid polar pattern and flat frequency response, with a tighter pickup angle, that enables your voice to be isolated from any unwanted background noises, like mouse clicks or typing.

There’s also a built-shock mount that dampens vibrations and makes sure interferences don’t get in the way of your videos.

Due to its small size, the mic is very easy to place and transport anywhere. However, the mic can be too light and fragile, making it easier to break it or mishandle.

The mic comes with a little tripod that really facilitates positioning on your desk. It also feels pretty tight and has a good weight, making it easy to handle, so mounting shouldn’t be a problem. It also has a practical gain control knob.

This is a cardioid directional condenser mic, which means that it’s smooth enough to clearly capture your voice while eliminating static and background noises.

Overall, this is an extremely advisable choice for those wanting to get into the ASMR world with a tight budget. The few complaints that can be found regarding the product’s quality are minimal but often refer to a gain sensitivity that could be a bit better.

This is another affordable and very nice-looking choice, this time, from Tonor. This mic can provide solid sound quality and has some interesting features and accessories coming along with it.

It works through a cardioid pickup pattern and offers really solid sound quality for the price you get it for. A background noise suppression system is also present.

Regarding practicality, the mic’s shock mount can be unscrewed to be attached to a boom stand. Plus, the only thing you need to set up after receiving the product is the three-legged stand, just by quickly unfolding and adjusting its position on your desk.

The mic also comes with a few important accessories, such as one three-legged stand and a pop filter.

There are a few user complaints regarding the same subject: the delivery of nonfunctioning mics. There’s no specific problem with them really, they simply don’t work when connected to a proper device. Gladly, Tonor customer support is apparently pretty great, and buyers that received a product in these particular conditions got a new (and functioning) one.

9) FDUCE USB

FDUCE USB Plug&Play Computer Microphone, Professional Studio PC Mic with Tripod for Gaming, Streaming, Podcast, Chatting, YouTube on Mac & Windows(Black)

The Good

  • Good sound quality
  • Extremely affordable
  • Important control knobs on mic
  • Come with solid metal tripod

The Bad

  • Gain sensibility could be better
  • Customer support isn’t that great

Check on Amazon

The most affordable alternative on the list, the FDUCE not only does a solid job for its worth, but also looks great and comes along with some good extra material.

You could expect some cheaply made material considering the price, but this thing has an all-metal shell design with great texture and is much more resistant to shocks and occasional dropping than the average mic.

The mic works with a cardioid polar pattern, with the usual noise and interference reduction system. Also present in the mic are mute/unmute and volume control buttons that make configuration a lot more practical.

Regarding its accessories, the tripod that comes along with it’s also made from solid metal. The flexible stand and additional stand increase the positioning possibilities for the mic, making sure you’re able to hit a sweet spot with it. A windscreen and a foam cover are also included in the buy.

On a negative note, the mic’s sensitivity is a little below average, as well as some buyers complaining about customer support that could be more responsive and resourceful.

10) Amazon Basics Desktop Mini

Amazon Basics Mini USB Condenser Microphone for Online Meeting, Gaming, Podcast - Black

The Good

  • Good sound quality
  • Mute button w/ LED indicator
  • More affordable

The Bad

  • Three-legged stand is fragile
  • Mic is sensitive to plosive sounds

Check on Amazon

This Amazon Basics mic option also comes at a more affordable price than most, with two options of colors: black and white.

The sound quality in this one is solid for what you pay for. This is a condenser option with a unidirectional pickup pattern. Many claim that the noise and interference suppressor system on this mic is pretty high standard compared to other ones on the same price range, which is a huge plus.

There’s a mute/unmute button on the mic with a LED indicator that informs you about the device’s current status. The mic’s also pretty small (but not fragile) and handling it shouldn’t be a problem to anyone.

However, the three-legged stand that comes along with the mic is a bit too fragile, getting broken too easily. The product is also a bit too sensitive to plosive sounds, which would be fixed by the addition of a pop filter.
