The Canon EOS 90D is a powerful DSLR camera equipped with many functions for both photographers and videographers. Not to mention the high resolution it has: 32.5 megapixels.
This camera features a lot of improvements over the previous 80D, and it’s a great option for DSLR users that don’t want to jump into the mirrorless market yet.
It’s fast, versatile, and offers amazing image quality but… is it good for vlogging?
That’s what we’re going to find out!

Canon EOS 90D Overview
Mirrorless cameras are probably the preferred choice among vloggers because they are smaller and more lightweight than traditional DSLRs, which makes them easier to carry around.
However, for some people, it’s hard to leave behind the classical SLR style, and the Canon EOS 90D is a great competitor against mid-range mirrorless cameras right now.
It has an APS-C sensor and it offers some cool stuff for YouTubers and vloggers, such as a flip-screen, 4K video with full sensor coverage, and good AF.
Let’s take a closer look at its main features:
Design and body construction
The body has a rugged construction and it’s protected against dust and splashes.
It weighs 1.55 lbs (701g) with battery and card included, which might be a little bit heavy to record handheld for a long time.
However, it has a good grip and it’s comfortable to hold.
Its physical design is similar to the 80D, but now it has an extra joystick to move the focus area around.
Although the controls have changed a bit, they are accessible and familiar with previous Canon models.
To please vloggers, the 90D has a fully-articulating LCD touch-screen. This way you can delight yourself with your beautiful face while you’re recording daily vlogs (and also make sure the focus and framing are right, of course).
As for the storage options, it only has one memory card slot for SD/SDHC/SDXC cards, and it supports UHS-II.
32.5 megapixels APS-C sensor
As mentioned above, the camera has an APS-C sensor with a crazy resolution of 32.5 megapixels. With this, you can crop an image almost as much as you want without losing detail.
The sensor provides clean and high-quality results for photo and video.
It also handles noise pretty well, with a sensitivity range of ISO 100-25600 that will allow you to work in low-light conditions.
Autofocus and image stabilization
Autofocus performance is great. It’s fast and reliable in both still and video modes.
The AF system has Dual-Pixel technology, which delivers smooth and quick focusing for any situation.
It also has precise Face detection and tracking, which is available in Live View mode and when shooting through the viewfinder as well. However, it works much better in Live View mode.
Unfortunately, the Canon EOS 90D doesn’t have image stabilization. This might be a big disadvantage for most vloggers.
Nevertheless, it has two levels of digital IS that can help you get more steadiness, but, it’ll crop the video, so you’ll lose some field of view.
Besides that, Canon offers an image stabilization system in their lenses, but it’s not available in all models, so you’ll have to check that out.
Video and time-lapse functions
This camera can record beautiful-looking video and delivers great quality and benefits for vloggers.
It captures 4K video at 30 fps with full sensor coverage, which is simply amazing. It can also shoot Full HD video at 60 or 120 fps for creating slow-motion videos.
In addition to the awesome video capabilities, the camera has a time-lapse mode.
Battery and connectivity
One of the main advantages of DSLRs over mirrorless cameras is that battery life lasts longer.
And the Canon EOS 90D has a big battery that lasts forever.
Well… maybe not forever, but at least for enough time that no mirrorless camera can beat it.
However (and sadly), this camera doesn’t support USB charging, so you’ll need extra batteries all the time because you won’t be able to power the camera while recording.
This is bad news for travel vloggers too, because there’s no way to charge the battery without the external charger and a conventional power source.
To deal with this small issue, you can get additional batteries.
Moving on to the connectivity options, as you might expect, the 90D has Wi-Fi and Bluetooth (but no NFC).
You can connect the camera to your smartphone and use it as a remote control or play with other fun stuff in the Camera Connect app (available for Android and iOS).
In addition to that, the camera includes micro USB (not USB Type C) and micro HDMI ports, as well as headphone and microphone ports.
Is The Canon EOS 90D Good for YouTube and Vlogging?
In a world full of mirrorless cameras that are becoming more popular and advanced every day, can a DSLR enter the competition?
Well, it seems this one can.
It’s no secret that there are amazing mirrorless cameras in the market right now, and that they are smaller and even faster.
However, the 90D has amazing improvements in autofocus performance and image quality, so it’s a strong competitor against cameras like the Sony a6400.
For that reason, the Canon EOS 90D is a great option for vloggers that feel more comfortable with DSLR cameras and don’t want to enter the mirrorless world.
This camera is probably a better choice for at-home vloggers instead of walking-and-talking vloggers, though.
To sum all this up, the reasons why you might want to buy the Canon EOS 90D are that video quality looks amazing, the body is solid as a rock, it has great ergonomics, a flip-screen, good battery life and it’s versatile.
On the other hand, the reasons why you might not want to buy this camera are that it’s heavy, it doesn’t have image stabilization and doesn’t support USB charging.
Best Vlogging/YouTube Lenses for the Canon EOS 90D
It’s all fun and laughter until you wonder what lenses you should buy, right?
Don’t worry, I’m here to help you!
YouTube Lens for The Canon EOS 90D: Canon EF 35mm f/2 IS USM
This is a good choice to record on a tripod at home. It has a wide aperture and it’s also equipped with image stabilization.
Vlogging Lens for The Canon EOS 90D (wide-angle): Canon EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM Lens
This lens is super compact. It’s like a pancake, so it won’t add much extra weight to the camera. It’s perfect for vlogging!
Unfortunately, there are no wide-angle lenses with stabilization for Canon, but at least this one is light and affordable. For vlogging with a Canon without image stabilization like the 90D, it’s probably not such a bad idea to get the kit lens since it comes with Optical stabilizaiton.
