Top 6 Best Cameras for YouTube Videos

Intro to the Best Cameras for YouTube Videos

Finding the best camera for YouTube videos is something you will certainly want before starting your own channel. We all know that having the best camera won’t lead you to success, but having good quality certainly helps.

This is especially true when it comes to saving you time by having a camera that you can trust in every aspect: from delivering great quality, to not suffering interruptions due to camera faults.

But it’s difficult to find the right one since there are so many cameras out there. You just look at all those options and you ask yourself:

“Jeez, what camera should i buy for YouTube?

You might know nothing about cameras, so you might feel a little bit confused about all this. That’s why I’ve put together this post to talk about good cameras for YouTube videos for different channel categories.

This way you can choose a the best option for your content.

I also made sure to no get too technical and to only include the relevant features that you’re going to need to record your videos.

If you’re not sure if you should buy a new camera for your YouTube recordings, you should check my post about the best camera for YouTube beginners. There I’ll tell you some ways to make sure you really need to buy a new camera.

Finally, I will put a Table of Contents so you can navigate to the kind of channel you plan to run.

Now, let’s roll.

For Beauty Gurus, Cooking, Artistic Videos and Pretty Much Any Home-Made Video.

As a YouTuber you will want to aim for a DSLR eventually.

It’s not the camera you need to start out, but when you use one of them you never go back.

Mirrorless cameras are also a good option if you need to take your camera out, but if you will record mostly from home, a DSLR is really handy because they have much more battery life on average.

For this you will need to use a good lens to achieve the best effect and low-light performance.  Also, the ability to control how your camera captures light is essential for your colors to look as sharp as possible.

If you plan to make YouTube makeup tutorials, I’ve put an extensive guide about the best camera and lighting you can use for makeup vlogging. Here you will find more information about the camera I’ll feature here, which lens to buy and why it’s the preferred one between makeup YouTubers.

Nevertheless, I’ll still show you here why I generally choose the following DSLR as the best camera for a YouTube channel, although it’s especially good for beauty channels.

Canon EOS Rebel T5i

The Canon Rebel line has, for quite some time now, been the most popular DSLR between filming students.

It’s been also popular between makeup YouTubers since this vlogging style started to grow. The reason for this is that the Canon EOS Rebel T5i is a DSLR designed for video.

When the T3i was released, it was the most picked camera for YouTube beauty videos, and it’s still used by YouTubers with a lot of subscribers, like Kandee Johnson.

Now the T3i is discontinued and its newer version is the EOS T5i, which represents an improvement over its predecessor.

This one has a good continuous auto-focus compared to most DSLR cameras –including the T3i- and it has more megapixels (18MP). Its APS-C sensor has not only more MP, but it also achieves better color, especially for close-ups of human skin; this makes it the best camera for YouTube makeup tutorials and the like.

There’s no need to mention that it can record 1080p (at 30, 25 or 24 fps according to your preferences).

Its ISO can also go up as 25,600, so you can expect to be able to work even with low light. Its performance is the best from this list when it comes to handling lighting.

I know you might feel confused by all these terms I’m throwing at you, but this is stuff you should start to learn if you want a channel like this.

The results you can get by knowing how to manually manage this DSLR can have incredible results in the quality of your videos.

Finally, it also has an external microphone port, which is necessary to do high quality YouTube vlogging.

If you plan to buy it, you should know that you should buy a fixed 50mm lens along with it. This type of lens will achieve the blurred background effect that is really popular between these channels and has the best low-light performance.

I’d tell you to only buy the body of the camera and get a fixed 50mm lens, but it seems that, as I write this post, it costs the same with the starting lens kit than without it. Nevertheless, you should check this before buying.

Alternatively, if you really want the best DSLR camera for video recording, you should check the Canon EOS 70D. I just think it’s a little bit overkill –and expensive- for a YouTube channel, but maybe you have bigger plans than what I think you do.

Ayways, the T5i will not let you down, I can assure you. It is the main choice of people looking for the best camera for video without being professional photographers or directors.

For Tech and Product Review Videos

For tech videos, you could actually read the YouTube beauty guru videos and Cooking & Health section. The Canon Rebel EOS T5i is also a really good option for you after all.

Nevertheless, you might not need it as bad as a makeup tutorial vlogger or a cooker; you won’t need to buy such a high quality and adaptable camera for this kind of YouTube vlogging.

The blurred background effect achieved by using a fixed lens on the T5i might come in handy, but it’s not necessary for all tech channels either.

So, the two best options you could get are: the Canon VIXIA HF G20 camcorder or the Canon EOS Rebel T5i DSLR.

Canon VIXIA HF G20

This camcorder has a new version called the Canon VIXIA HF G30, but the G20 is still a good option.

The G30 makes up for all the flaws that this camera has (which includes only being able to record 1080p at 30fps and no MP4 recording), but it’s much more expensive.

It might be worth for you getting the G30 instead; it will depend on your needs.

The VIXIA G20 can record 1080p video and allows an external. This is not much different from the T5i, but it’s just much easier to use and it still has an amazing quality. It’s the best camcorder on the market along with the VIXIA G30.

As I already said, getting the T5i is the best choice. However, using a camcorder will surely save you more time.

By getting a professional camcorder like this you won’t have to worry about lenses, filters and such. On the other hand, you will still be able to use manual settings and control your recordings like a professional.

This is why I still think this is a really good choice if you don’t need to focus so much on lighting like a makeup artist does. This makes it a pretty good easy-to-handle camera for tech channels.

You’ll be able to buy it and start recording right away with really high quality.

The camcorder will be easier to use and it will record for longer times as long as you buy a bigger battery –it comes with a really small one, although it can record around 2 hours continuously-.

You won’t get the quality you can get with the Canon T5i, but this is not as necessary as for a makeup or cooking & health channels.

In general, the Canon VIXIA HF G20 is very popular between tech review channels because of this reason.

For Action Vlogging and Travel Channels

Action vlogging, and everything that is filmed outside your house, cries for a wide-angle lens.

This type of lens will allow you to record wide shots, so it’s great when holding the camera and recording yourself while walking around.

But that’s not the only reason why they’re so useful…

They’re also really nice to show people exactly what you’re seeing; with a wide-angle lens you make the audience look through your eyes.

This is the exact result you’re looking for when filming for a channel like this.

These are the two best cameras for YouTube videos that can achieve this for any action vlogging or outside recording:

GoPro HERO 4

If you read the previous paragraphs, you should already know why GoPro was so successful.

The ability to show your perspective through a wide-angle lens located on your head was unachievable by any other camera. This was just gold for people that did incredibly stuff to show to other people.

It’s been some years since its first version, but it is still the best camera for action vlogging.

You can record 1080p60 video with a waterproof camera that is basically “press and start recording”. It’s also really light and can fit anywhere.

The GoPro HERO 4 also comes with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, so it’s even easier to upload your videos to your PC.

You will need to buy a support for it, and the one you buy will depend on the type of vlogging you’re going to do with it.

It is the best option if you need to use a hands-free camera, but there is another higher-quality recording camera if you don’t need the waterproof: the Canon VIXIA mini.

Canon VIXIA mini X

This one is not hands-free like the HERO 4, but it records higher-quality.

Since the GoPro HERO 4 was made for pure action vlogging, it doesn’t come with an external microphone port. However, this one does. It is one of the reasons why I say it has better recording quality.

It also has a better sensor that can perform better in low-light situations and it has appreciably better video recording.

It’s really useful when you need to record a wide shot in a small space. This happens a lot when you want to record your whole body while placing the camera in the same room. The Canon VIXIA mini X gets rid of this problem.

This means you can use this camera for other kind of vlogging that require a wide-angle lens, even inside your house.

It also has continuous autofocus, just like a camcorder, and a flip-out screen to allow you to see what you’re recording. This is really useful for travel vlogging.

What Camera do YouTubers use for Gaming?

The answer to this question depends on the kind of gaming channel.
If you’d like to make “Let’s Play” or games reviews, you have various option.

I separated this category depending on your gaming platform:

Best Camera for PC Gaming Videos

If you’re going to record PC games, you will do just fine with a webcam. Webcams are good YouTube cameras if you don’t need the best quality ever.

Here’s a list of really good webcams that will give you more than enough quality for gaming videos.

Logitech HD Pro Webcam C920

This webcam has a video quality that is unmatchable by any other. It doesn’t look like you are recording through a webcam.

However, you will still need a microphone. This shouldn’t be a problem. After all, if you’re planning to do videos for YouTube, an external microphone will always be necessary.

This camera is so cheap that you won’t mind spending on a microphone.

Here is a list of good USB microphones you could get to use with this camera.

This one is not compatible with MAC, so if you use this OS you can get its equivalent: the Logitech HD Portable 1080p Webcam C615 with Autofocus

Best Camera for Console Gaming videos

Having a camera that can stand on a tripod will be your main need. Which camera you use will depend on your needs.

In my humble opinion, I don’t think that you will need a really high-quality recording camera. When you do gameplays you will show yourself in a really small frame at the corner of the video. You won’t need 1080p video as it won’t be appreciated with such a small image.

You will probably do fine with a point & shoot, and you might want to get a higher quality camcorder or DSLR only if you’re planning to expand and do other kind of videos that will need a better camera.

Before beginning, you need to define which microphone you’ll use. You need to think this beforehand to decide the best YouTube camera for your particular situation.

If you’re going to use your headphone’s mic connected to your laptop or desktop computer, you won’t need a camera with an external microphone. On the other hand, if you don’t, you will need a camera that allows an external mic to record good audio.

Here are your two best options:

Nikon Coolpix L840 if You’ll Record Audio to Laptop or Personal Computer

Even if you don’t really need it, this one can still record 1080p. What makes this one a great choice for Let’s Plays is that it has a nice battery life for the price; it’s really annoying to a run out of battery in the middle of a video.

With this camera you will sacrifice an external microphone port for 1080p video recording.

It also allows Wi-Fi connection, which will make things easier when transferring files to a PC.

This camera is around the $200 mark, and it’s around the maximum amount you should be willing to pay; you don’t need much for this type of YouTube channel.

Fujifilm FinePix S8600 if You Need an External Microphone Port

>By buying the Fujifilm FinePix S8600 you will sacrifice the 1080p quality recording and the Wi-Fi capacity for a really cheap camera that has the basics for vlogging.

It is much cheaper than the L840, and it really is just what you need if you want to keep on a budget for a YouTube gaming channel.

Bear in mind that you will probably need a tripod if you are going to use any of these two cameras. Nevertheless, they will do okay with a cheap one because they’re both lightweight. On the other hand, if you plan to get a G20 or a T5i instead, you will want to spend a little bit more on a stronger tripod.

Hi there! If I buy the cannon rod 70d camera for still recording and picture purposes, will my 2012 MacBook Pro sustain such camera efficiency? Thanks in advance.

      Hello Liz,

Your Macbook shouldn’t have troubles handling the image files. These computers are really good for photography because they come with good, efficient processors for this kind of job.

I notice it’s always Canon that’s recommended. Any thoughts about Nikon DSLRs? (like the D7000)?
